It’s Alive!

That right guys, the MX-5 is alive!

I received an SMS 1 hour before I finished work today, it was from Anth, ” the car is almost ready to go”, so excited the remaining hour felt like forever.

Anyway, 4 o’clock finally arrived, and I was out the door, and on the way to Dahtone Racing.

So, I haven’t seen the car in a few days, and I was pleasantly surprised to see how the progress went.

Anth said to me, “we’ll start the car tonight” my eyes literally glowed, the amount of excitement I had was unbelievable.

We had a few hiccups to before that perfect crank of the key, it started!, but was running in limp mode “Oh shit!” I thought, what could it be?

Turns out somethings going on with the Piggyback, it seems to respond on the reds, but when the engine is running it doesn’t respond. So for now we bypassed it to see how it ran … Perfect!

The sound emitted from the exhaust was amazing, it’s extremely loud, yet beautifully crisp thanks to that incredible RS*R muffler. The N power headers really beef up the tone of the car too.

Anthony wanted to make sure the gearbox wasn’t a “dud”, so he went through all the gears and it all went smoothly.

There are a few little bits and pieces left, which will all be completed tomorrow. I can’t wait!

This is how the engine bay currently looks, if I do end up getting the Bomex bumper, I will probably make a duct for the Flow Stack to the passenger side inlet.

Onto The Final Stages

Man, what a night! its 12am, and I just got my ass back from Dahtone.

We managed to do a fair bit of work tonight, the gearbox, tailshaft, PPF and diff are now on the car. Along with the headers, mid pipe and muffler.

We did have a few run ins, but nothing serious … we realised I need to chase a NB electric gearbox sender though.

Heres a few snaps of Dave, Anth and I getting things into place.

Then I checked out the headers one last time, and attempted to fit them, Shit! they are hitting something.

Out came the hammer, time to massage the floor pan.

5 minutes later, it fitted nicely, another new problem occurred which will hopefully be fixed tomorrow … the De-cat pipe is now at a wrong angle, and too long. Easy fix.

We had a go at mocking up the short shifter too, it feels wierd shifting in the MX, haha, but i can’t wait!

Contemplating keeping the centre console removed too, its pretty comfy without it.

Tomorrow, the wiring for the box should be sorted, the Intake manifold will be reinstalled, and we will see if the thing drives! should be some exciting stuff.

Bits And Pieces On Standby …

Tomorrow, work commences on the MX-5, today I did some running around in getting some vital parts for the conversion.

I finally got my hands on this nice piece of kit, the ORC racing clutch/flywheel combo.

It’s a used piece that came out of Zi’s (the JDMYard) MX-5, the new owner wrote it off on at the Royal national park … but thats another story all together.

Plenty of meat left on it, and should hold up quite well, similar to the old clutch I had, it is also a 6 puck sprung setup.

Thinking long and hard about what gear knob I wanted, a mate of mine (Xhonda_boy) offered me his old one … which I adored I didn’t pass the opportunity to take it.

Its a bit battered, but it’s still good, it’s still good!

Trust Grex gear knob … it feels great, and offers a very smooth shift.

Still need to take this piece out of the Micra, a Jaycar DFA … I’ll be using this to lean out the fuel and hopefully gain a bit more power out of the MX-5.

And finally, I figured, we need to take of the headers to rip the gearbox out, and I have a new exhaust system, I might as well finish it off with some decent headers. Now the Npower headers aren’t ideal … they are like a OBXR/Raceland equivalent, but I am sure they will squeeze out that bit more power then my standard headers. Considering that the outlet Diameter is 2.5 inch, it matches the rest of my setup perfectly!

Still trying to track down a few more parts … I am currently after an NB tailshaft so if anyone has any idea where I could find one, holla at me.
