Flying Start

This was the first thing I saw when I went to Dahtone after work today, They sure don’t mess around! The engine and gearbox are out, and most of the parts have already been swapped over. I was pretty happy to see everything coming together.

Heres the engines dominating the workshop.

Theres lots of goodies scattered everywhere! I managed to catch Anthony in time for the Maruha oil pan baffle install too. It’s such an easy job and great insurance too.

Another cool gadget fitted on the new engine is the Greddy oil cooler adaptor plate with built-in thermostat.  As you might of read earlier I was supplied the wrong thread and a replacement was going to cost me $40! However we managed to use my threaded sleeve off my previous sandwich plate. The cool thing about these is that the thermostat is built into the plate, and you have the option to run sensors to the plate, As there are four outlets.

Tomorrow, I’m guessing the engine will be ready to put back in the car, We’ll take it as it comes.

A Bump In The Road

Today I headed to get my new engine, But upon inspection I noticed that it isn’t actually an NB 1.8 litre, But an NA8 engine. So there’s been a slight change of plans. Now I’ll be gathering all the parts I need during the swap. Once I’ve obtained all these parts, I’ll be on the hunt again.

As of today, I have ordered the following parts from Maruha and Miata Roadster, Which are both great to deal with!

Maruha 78 thermostat with long stroke
Maruha oil pan baffle
Mazdaspeed competition motor mounts 

Now I just need to get my hands on a Greddy/GREX oil cooler plate w/Thermostat, Some lines and an oil cooler … And anything else that comes up along the way.

Roadster Of The Week – Steven’s NB Miata

This sleek black NB is from Dallas, Texas in the US of A, And I’ve had my eye on it for quite a while for now. I contacted Steve some time ago about getting his Roadster on the blog, And finally … It is!

“I bought the car in the fall of 2006. It was bone stock but I had a vision for it. See, I came from a long line of high-performance, highly modified cars. I had worked my way up from a 1986 Toyota MR2 through 3 more MR2’s (one being a very nicely modded MK2 Turbo) on to a 300whp bugeye Subaru WRX and then a fancy-schmancy Mercedes C32 AMG. Pretty much everyone I know thought I was crazy when I sold the luxury rocket ship AMG to get a ’99 Miata with 114k miles on it. They just didn’t see what I saw when I looked at it.”

This is one mean looking Roadster, The Garage Vary eyelids are partly responsible for creating a rather happy looking car, Appear angry and aggressive. A Garage Vary front lip also helps with the aggressive appearance that Steve’s NB has. Other exterior modifications consist of a OEM hardtop, “Large” OEM Side skirts, And “Small” OEM mud guards.

The set of wheels on Steve’s NB are a set of Rota Grid off roads, However for track events he switches to a set of 949Racing 6UL’s.

Once upon a time, Steve’s interior was cream from factory. So Steve swapped it out for the standard black trim. Along with that he installed a set of Sparco Speed seats and a set of Ultrashield 5 point harness’s. Steve also has a couple of Autometer sport gauges to monitor the vitals.


“Before I even bought the car I knew I’d go with boost. I had planned on going the turbo route since I was way more familiar with that than with superchargers. Gary from Track Dog Racing – located here in Dallas, TX – convinced me otherwise while I was standing in his back yard talking shop one day. I’m glad he did. While the 210whp that my car currently makes may not sound like a lot, the way it’s delivered from the MP62 supercharger is brilliant. It drives like a strong V6 car instead of like a small turbo’ed 4-banger. Power and torque are linear, predictable and available down low in the revs. It makes going balls out a whole lot more fun.”

You read right, There’s a MP62 Supercharger bolted to the BP4W engine, Which is currently running at 10PSI. To help run this boost safely, A TDR intercooler has been installed, Along with a set of 350cc injectors. A Jackson Racing header, And a Racing Beat exhaust system has been installed, Which reduces flow and increases power further.

 This is controlled by the well-known Greddy E-manage Ultimate. Steve has had some problems with the drivetrain holding up the extra power, So he has had the PPF reinforced and has upgraded the clutch.

“What I saw back then is what everyone else sees now. A car that’s equally as comfortable on the track as it is at a show. It turns corners and heads in equal measure.”

Roadster Of The Week – Chris’s NA6T Roadster

Building any car on a budget is not as easy as some might think, But Chris from Saskatchewan, Canada, Has managed to build himself a turbocharged NA6 without selling out his kidneys!

“I ended up picking up the car after some lady hit my current daily driver at the time. I had driven many Miatas before 2 NA’s, 2 NB’s and 1 NC, SO I had a good feeling about the car. As I was in college at the time, I was pursuing something reliable, but something I could also have fun with and still do track events with such as AutoX and tentatively drifting.

So after a few quick emails back and forth between the previous owner, I quickly booked a plane ticket to Calgary AB, and flew out that night on May 2 2008. While I was in Calgary, I ended up picking up a set of sport max 501 wheels as I wanted something more than winter tires to summer drive on. When I picked up the car I had a good feeling about it and it put a huge smile on my face. I drove it back home to Saskatoon SK(700km) and there was no doubt in my mind I had bought a good car.”


“My first event I did was an AM drift event in Edmonton AB in July of 2008. At the time my current specs were fairly stock. A welded in 4 pt roll bar I made, an air filter, an exhaust and coilovers. I placed 8th out of 37. I was pretty content sitting in my roadster now, knowing i could throw down with 300whp skylines, S13’s, S14’s etc. I was 1 of 4 cars at that event who didn’t have a turbo on their car.

The car pretty much stayed stock for the rest of the year. Keep in mind I’m going to school, and trying to fund and build a race car doesn’t exactly happen too quickly when you’re in school.”

Seeing these pictures of Chris sliding his Roadster must have you wondering what that body kit is. It is a replica of the legendary Arios body kit, And it suits Chris’s car to a tee. He’s currently rocking a set of Sportmax/XXR 002’s, In 15×8 0 offset sizing. The NA6 was recently painted a fresh gloss black too, replacing the original green paint work.

Giving the NA6 such a low ride height, Are a set of Megan Racing coilovers with 10kg springs on the front struts, And 8kg springs on the rear. Most know that Roadsters’s don’t have much lock when it comes to drifting, Chris has addressed this problem with a pair of Secret Element inner tie rods. These increase lock at over 25%.


The cabin has been revised recently too. The newest edition is the welded in rollcage painted fluro green. Chris is getting serious nowadays and the 4 point roll bar he made a while ago needed an upgrade. The pair of seats holding Chris into place are a set of Sparco sprints,RCI Harness’s strap him down to avoid too much movement during transitions. The  steering wheel of choice is a Momo, and other than the necessities like the Trsico Boost gauge and AEM V2 Wideband, The rest of the cabin is completely gutted.


Chris gives the Khumo SPT tyres absolute hell, Thanks to the Greddy TD05 turbocharger and Megan Racing manifold bolted to the side of the engine. Theres a Megan Racing 2.5 inch dump pipe and Speedtech 2.5 inch resonated exhaust extracting exhaust gases. A Ebay intercooler and custom 2.5 inch intercooler piping helping the engine keep it’s temperatures down. Some 7MGE 310cc injectors, A Blox FMU fuel pressure regulator, and 1JZ Supra fuel pump increase the fueling capabilities. Chris has also installed a blitz blow off valve that expels the 12 pounds of boost that this setup creates.

All of this is controled by an Apexi SAFC II and a Bipes ACU timing controller, Many say these kind of things are the “Band aid’s” of engine management, But hey, If Chris has managed to run such a setup with great reliability then it just goes to show how good these units really are.


“As far as the car looking good. After that first event it got really really beat up with the slippery track on the first day and the large amounts of mud that accumulated on the car. I guess that’s why I decided to retire it as a daily driver and do solely track with it. It isn’t exactly comfortable anymore but it gets the job done.

The roads here in Saskatchewan Canada also take quite a toll on a low car. WIth the harsh winters and hot summers, it really wrecks the roads fast, so you become quite good at dodging pot holes, cracking your aero and scraping frame.”
